지난 일요일에 작성해서 냈던 영작 숙제. 지적사항이 돌아와서 반영한 수정본이다. 여러 주제 중 나는 "Write a story that tells why a certain place is special to you."라는 주제를 택했고, 가장 이야기를 잘 풀어갈 수 있는 그 얘기를 택했다.

그러니까... 이건 "우리 이렇게 만났어요."의 영문 축약판이라고나 할까.

The Anmeyon Island is located at mid-western part of the Korean Peninsula, and is adjacent to Yellow Sea. The island is famous for its beautiful scenery including the sunset at the Kkot-gi beach, which attracts a lot of tourists. But for me, the island is very special, because it was where my love began.

In the spring of 2004, I received an instant message from somebody via a web messenger. She introduced herself as Jopen, her nickname, and told me that she found me by using command “randomly searching friends”. It was common to start a conversation between strangers when using a web messenger. So I said hello to her, and continued chatting. We were different in many aspects. I was a graduate student of geologic department, and lived in Seoul. She was a senior majoring in animation, and lived in Jochiwon, Chungnam Province for the semester. But we had more things in common than we thought, so we became so called “chat buddies”.

One day, I guess it was late-May, her computer got out of order. She had to fix it as soon as possible to make a computer animation for her homework. Without a MS Windows CD, she could not re-install her computer, so she came to Seoul to borrow my one. That was the first time when we met. After meeting and coming back to each other’s home, we ran into the computer to begin chatting again. Yes, we fell in love with each other. Unfortunately, we could not meet again easily, because it was the end of the semester, very busy time for both of us.

In 12th June 2004, her semester got over. She wanted to stay with her family in Guri during the summer vacation for refreshing herself, and had to move a lot of baggage. I wanted to help both carrying her baggage and refreshing her. So I planned to give her a ride to the sea on the way to her family. The Anmyeon Island was where we drove, not only because it’s relatively close to her university but because it was famous for its beautiful scenery. The island was fantastic. A shiny sun, a clean sea, a wide beach, and a soft sea breeze welcomed us. We walked around the beach hand in hand. About the time when the sky was painted with red and purple, I declared my love to her, and so did she. After two and half years, we finally got married.

Recently my parents suggested us to go for a picnic to the Anymyeon Island, saying “The island is very famous for its beautiful scenery and delicious shrimp BBQ”. We smiled. The Anmyeon Island is more than that to us.


다음 글도 내일까지 해서 내야 하는데 언제 쓰나. 에세이 영작이니 할만 하겠거니 했는데, 이 수업 은근히 빡빡하구나.
